How many teenage boys awake from a gang initiation with an ironic tattoo still bleeding on their skin? Retribution, is the word that connects Jason Sparks to a fateful night that leaves one man dead and another serving a self-imposed sentence. Its haunting memories are the very shackles that hold him to a personal prison. But the personal prison doesn't seem like all that horrible of a place to stay. With fate twisted by an unseen hand, a routine trip to downtown Denver, Colorado forces Jason to make a life-changing decision to come to the aid of a helpless policeman and risk being caught and tried for murder, or to turn a blind eye as the policeman of the past did to him as a boy.

A wondeful and well written book, from the start to the end, with a beautiful sensibility towards the messed up souls of the most vulnerable, the young people, in our medern society. With all that garbage and filth that's coming out of Holywood and nasty video game industry, that polute the minds of the inocent youth of our modern day, here is finaly a honest, decent approach in a book to help and give some kind of direction in life, or to turn some messed up lives around. It is simply an excellent book, that I could hardly put down. When you read it, you feel the compassion of the writer for the disperate need to help the young and the old alike, and to show that there is more to life than just this sometimes miserable path that are so easily taken. What an inspiration and benefit would be for the Boot Camps for troubled boys or girls, to be as an excellent example, that it is possible and never too late to turn their lives around. This excellent book has all the ingredients to do just that. I cannot write highly enough about this well presented, the fun description of the characters in this book, and great quality writing. Not to mention the promising talent of this young lady, who cared enough for the people involved in gangs, to write and talk about it, in an atempt to help to straighten up their lives. I highly recommend this book to everyone.Product details

Paper Shackles edition by Laurisa Borlovan Children eBooks Reviews
I loved this story! The story had me captivated from page 1. Although it was about a gang member I coud relate to his maturing, growing and the changing going on his life. I was pulled right into the story as if I were there. I laughed, cried and rejoiced as the youth made his way from being a troubled teen into a respectable christian man. I would recommend this book to anyone young or old. I think there is something in here for any walk of life, very inspirational!
I think this is a good book for teens or juveniles who have gotten themselves in too deep with trouble or gangs and think they can't change. Hopefully reading about change will make them think they can also!
This book's storyline pulled me in and I couldn't put it down. I actually read the entire book in about 2 days. I initially purchased the e-book and now have the paperback and I can't wait to read it again. I think this book would appeal to both teenagers and adults to read. Well worth the purchase.
I have read a lot of books but this one gripped me and i couldn't put it down until i finished. I am having my troubled nephew read this. It will be an inspiration to quite a few young people.
I really enjoyed this book, because it shows that anybody can change for the better with the right help. There are so many young adolescents struggling out there in the world today, with very little or no guidance to put them on the right path. The ranch in the story was a safe, self-esteem building environment and much more for troubled teens to rehabilitate and find out that life has so much more to offer than crime. Actually I feel that there should be more places like this in the world today, because the young people are, our future.
What a wonderful story from a very gifted young lady. I think often of her story Paper Shackles, a very full filling story of a young man and his destiny...Took me back a few years, we are all young in our hearts seeking or destiny or future, and many times looking for answers we place ourselves by rules of disposition many times becoming shackled we hold and won't let go, but when a truths manifests it releases us, yet many times we put ourselves under pressure trying to reach out to far...this story is so well balanced and full of virtus thoughts it will mesmerize you. To finalize my though is this. Paper Shackles Will cause you to examine your life and many times we well have found we were shackled the very same way...My recommendation is for all young or old men and women to read it. I promise you will not be disappointed. Bruce
This is a heartwarming tale of redemption. A teenager initiated into a gang is involved in a burglary gone wrong where a policeman is killed. Jason flees the scene sure that he was the one whose gun went off. Fearing a life in prison, he flees the scene and ends up hitch hiking out west where he is fortuitously taken in by the Philips family on their ranch. There he begins the process of trying to change into a new person while still struggling with deep guilt and fear. I think the story portrays the thinking process of many teenagers (and some adults too) quite well - impulsive decisions based on strong emotions of the moment rather than well thought out logical reasoning which considers the big picture. It also portrayed well the inability some teens have to explain to anybody else why they do what they do.
The story moved along well from the beginning to the end with interesting character development, especially of Jason. And the world could sure use more fathers like Mr Philips! The story is full of twists and turns, and many "fortuitous" events. One comes away with a bit more compassion for errant youth.
I look forward to reading more by this author.
